(a) Define the order of α mod N\alpha \bmod N for coprime integers α\alpha and NN with α<N\alpha<N. Explain briefly how knowledge of this order can be used to provide a factor of NN, stating conditions on α\alpha and its order that must be satisfied.

(b) Shor's algorithm for factoring NN starts by choosing α<N\alpha<N coprime. Describe the subsequent steps of a single run of Shor's algorithm that computes the order of α\alpha mod NN with probability O(1/log⁡log⁡N)O(1 / \log \log N).

[Any significant theorems that you invoke to justify the algorithm should be clearly stated (but proofs are not required). In addition you may use without proof the following two technical results.

Theorem FTF T : For positive integers tt and MM with M⩾t2M \geqslant t^{2}, and any 0⩽x0<t0 \leqslant x_{0}<t, let KK be the largest integer such that x0+(K−1)t<M.x_{0}+(K-1) t<M . Let QFT denote the quantum Fourier transform  mod M\bmod M. Suppose we measure QFT(1K∑k=0K−1∣x0+kt⟩)Q F T\left(\frac{1}{\sqrt{K}} \sum_{k=0}^{K-1}\left|x_{0}+k t\right\rangle\right) to obtain an integer cc with 0⩽c<M.0 \leqslant c<M . Then with probability O(1/log⁡log⁡t),cO(1 / \log \log t), c will be an integer closest to a multiple j(M/t)j(M / t) of M/tM / t for which the value of jj (between 0 and tt ) is coprime to tt.

Theorem CF: For any rational number a/ba / b with 0<a/b<10<a / b<1 and with integers a and bb having at most nn digits each, let p/qp / q with pp and qq coprime, be any rational number satisfying

∣ab−pq∣⩽12q2.\left|\frac{a}{b}-\frac{p}{q}\right| \leqslant \frac{1}{2 q^{2}} .

Then p/qp / q is one of the O(n)O(n) convergents of the continued fraction of a/ba / b and all the convergents can be classically computed from a/ba / b in time O(n3)O\left(n^{3}\right).]
