Let kk and nn be integers with 1k<n1 \leqslant k<n. Show that every connected graph of order nn, in which d(u)+d(v)kd(u)+d(v) \geqslant k for every pair u,vu, v of non-adjacent vertices, contains a path of length kk.

Let kk and nn be integers with 1kn1 \leqslant k \leqslant n. Show that a graph of order nn that contains no path of length kk has at most (k1)n/2(k-1) n / 2 edges, and that this value is achieved only if kk divides nn and GG is the union of n/kn / k disjoint copies of KkK_{k}. [Hint: Proceed by induction on nn and consider a vertex of minimum degree.]
