Prove that χ(G)Δ(G)+1\chi(G) \leqslant \Delta(G)+1 for every graph GG. Prove further that, if κ(G)3\kappa(G) \geqslant 3, then χ(G)Δ(G)\chi(G) \leqslant \Delta(G) unless GG is complete.

Let k2k \geqslant 2. A graph GG is said to be kk-critical if χ(G)=k+1\chi(G)=k+1, but χ(Gv)=k\chi(G-v)=k for every vertex vv of GG. Show that, if GG is kk-critical, then κ(G)2\kappa(G) \geqslant 2.

Let k2k \geqslant 2, and let HH be the graph Kk+1K_{k+1} with an edge removed. Show that HH has the following property: it has two vertices which receive the same colour in every kk-colouring of HH. By considering two copies of HH, construct a kk-colourable graph GG of order 2k+12 k+1 with the following property: it has three vertices which receive the same colour in every kk-colouring of GG.

Construct, for all integers k2k \geqslant 2 and 2\ell \geqslant 2, a kk-critical graph GG of order k+1\ell k+1 with κ(G)=2.\kappa(G)=2 .
