Metric and Topological Spaces | Part IB, 2009

Given a function f:XYf: X \rightarrow Y between metric spaces, we write Γf\Gamma_{f} for the subset {(x,f(x))xX}\{(x, f(x)) \mid x \in X\} of X×Y.X \times Y .

(i) If ff is continuous, show that Γf\Gamma_{f} is closed in X×YX \times Y.

(ii) If YY is compact and Γf\Gamma_{f} is closed in X×YX \times Y, show that ff is continuous.

(iii) Give an example of a function f:RRf: \mathbb{R} \rightarrow \mathbb{R} such that Γf\Gamma_{f} is closed but ff is not continuous.
